Cycling in Piedmont, Italy

350 - 400kms ❖ 7500m+ ❖ 6 or 7 nights ❖ 2500 - 2900€ pp

We have been riding in this amazing region of Italy for 7 years and we want to share it with you. Piedmont is hilly, which usually means two things; vineyards and great road cycling; and there are roads for cycling EVERYWHERE! Some of the world’s finest wines come from here; Barolo and Barbaresco for example. On an exceptionally clear day you can see the Alps, from glaciated peaks of Southern France to Mont Blanc and to the Matterhorn. Take a look at a map to fully understand the scale.

The region’s name is also quite descriptive.

Pied = Foot.

Mont = Mountain.

Foot of the mountains.

Piedmont is also home to the Slow-Food movement which started in 1989 to prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions. The food is the best we have had in any of the regions where we ride (and we do manage to get around).

The cycling tour in Piedmont matches the fantastic food, and our routes have very little traffic. Each day has options to shorten or extend. Our favourite Gelateria in Tuscany has been replaced. First place honours now goes to a Gelateria we found in Acqui Terme. You will have two nights in Acqui to sample all the flavour combinations. You might just like their chocolate fountain. Click here to sign up for the chocolate trip.

Piedmont Ride Difficulty 5-6-7+/10 (depends on your fitness)

But that also depends on what routes you want to ride during the week. All rides are hilly and there are no flat days at all, so expect daily climbs. And yes. you will work to get those incredible views … which occur with amazing frequency during the week. Throughout the week your base routes average 55kms and 1000m gained per day which can be bumped up if you wish. Please don’t let any of the above detail strike fear into some of you. We have fantastic E-Bikes that will allow you to arrive at the top of EVERY climb before your friends. Those of you wanting a less strenuous cycling holiday in Piedmont, no problem. Just ask us, we can tone it down. Laps around the Gelateria anyone?

Meet your guide at the Tortona train station for the 45 minute van transfer to the beautiful Roman Spa town of Acqui Terme, which will be your home for 2 nights. After a quick bike fitting and safety session we are off on the first loop ride to the south of town. No cars and no tourists.

Day 2. Acqui Terme Loop Ride 2

Today we ride to the north of Acqui Terme on stunning, quiet roads to Nizza Monferrato. Today is your first taste of “Ridge Riding” in Piedmont. An experience that you will love and one that you will repeat daily until your trip end. Nice asphalt, quiet villages and those views!!

Day 3.

Acqui Terme to Castiglione Tinella

We leave Acqui Terme and her Spas (the water source in town is 68°C!) to ride to the hill-top town of Castiglione Tinella (top photo, yes, you and your bike sleeps and eats here). Today’s ride could be the ride of the week, but we will let you judge that for yourselves. Three easy climbs and more of those pesky Ridge Roads again. One of the downhills today will blow you away!

All roads lead to Barabaresco. The vino ain’t bad either.

Ride up to Diano d’Alba through thousands of grapes vines.

Day 4.

Castiglione Tinella to Monforte d’Alba

Well, maybe today is the ride of the week? Just another day in Paradise. You ride to the beautiful Monforte d’Alba (via Neive and Barbaresco), which will be your home for the next 3 nights. You have also entered the Barolo wine region, which is famous all over the world.

Barolo Vineyards

Vineyards, as far as the eye can see.

Day 5. Monforte d’Alba loop 1

The first of two loop rides from Monforte d’Alba. Grinzane Cavour, La Morra and Barolo itself are the highlighted villages en-route today. Beautiful climbs through traffic-free vineyard roads in Piedmont.

Day 6. Monforte d’Alba loop 2

Today we ride south and away from the tourists in Barolo. South to Dogliani, then up to Niella Belbo and the highest point of your tour and toughest ride of the week as well. One of the nicest ridge roads also. You forgot about those didn’t you.

Day 7. Trip end for some or ride Monforte d’Alba to Alba

Optional trip end for some or we keep riding. Our vote? Ride. We have a short and sweet ride to Alba; the biggest town in the area with a plethora of great restaurants. After arriving in Alba we have another extension to keep your climbing legs happy.

Day 8. Alba to Asti. trip end.

Last ride of the week to the Asti train station where your adventure comes to an end. The ride passes through Guarene and Govone but there is one steep little bump to negotiate prior to riding the ridge. The Asti train station Gelateria is the second place finalist for gelato . . . just in case you were wondering.

Sadly, no chocolate fountain though.
